Frankfort, Ky. (May 8, 2026) – Secretary of State Michael Adams announced that, ahead of the voter rolls closing on April 20 for the May 19 primary election, registrations continued to surge.
“With hundreds of federal, state and local races on the primary ballot this May, we are expecting a turnout of about 20%,” said Adams. "Primary turnout typically is 10%-15%."
Between April 1 and April 20, overall registration rose by 9,883 voters, while 3,146 voters were removed: 2,432 who were deceased, 366 felony convicts, 205 who moved out of state, 53 duplicate registrations, 36 adjudged mentally incompetent, 31 who voluntarily de-registered, and 23 identified as non-citizens.
Republican registration constitutes 48 percent of the electorate, with 1,610,910 voters. Republican registration grew by 3,915 voters, a .24 percent increase. Democratic registration accounts for 41 percent of the electorate, with 1,374,537 voters. Democratic registration grew by 1,168, a .09 percent increase. There are 379,997 voters registered under other political affiliations (mostly independent), making up 11 percent of the electorate. “Other” registration rose by 1,725, a .46 percent increase.
