FRANKFORT, Ky. (February 18, 2019) – Today, the Franklin Circuit Court issued a decision regarding the certification of the 2019 Primary Ballot.
Specifically, the Franklin Circuit Court ruled that Secretary Grimes was within her authority to prevent the ballot from being manipulated for political gamesmanship.
"Today, the Franklin Circuit Court reaffirmed my authority to remove a nickname from the ballot to ensure the integrity of our elections," said Grimes, Kentucky's Chief Election Official. "I appreciate the Court's careful consideration of the matter and upholding the work of this office. I will continue to fulfill my duties as Kentucky's Secretary of State in accordance with the law."
The Honorable Judge Thomas D. Wingate wrote "[the] Petitioner lacks a legal right to use the politically advantageous nickname, and the Secretary of State did not act arbitrarily in removing the alleged nickname from the ballot."
The ruling can be found here.
"Kentucky is 1 of 3 states that have elections in 2019 and my office looks forward to a free and fair primary election," said Grimes.
