RICHMOND, Ky. (May 29, 2019) – Fort Boonesborough State Park is inviting anyone who had ancestors in the area of the historic fort during the 18th century to a special reunion on June 15.
“A Gathering of Descendants” will be a chance to learn and find out about research on the history of Fort Boonesborough and its inhabitants.
While Daniel Boone is the most famous fort resident, the event is open to the public and any other descendants of families who were there. The event is free with paid admission to the fort.
There will be experts, authors and representatives from several local historical organizations, genealogical societies and family associations on hand. Dr. Nancy O’Malley, who is releasing a new book: “Boonesborough Unearthed: Frontier Archaeology at a Revolutionary Fort,” will be speaking and signing her book.
There will be food available from the Fort Boonesborough Foundation. The fort and the Transylvania Store Gift Shop will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. This event is free with the regular paid fort admission of $8 for adults, $6 for children 6 -12 and free for children 5 and under.
Fort Boonesborough was established in 1775 along the Kentucky River by Boone and other settlers. The fort became a center of pioneer life and survived attacks by Native Americans during the Revolutionary War. It continued as a community for a few decades after the war but eventually disappeared. The land where the fort was built became a state park in 1963. A new fort, built on higher land, was opened in 1974.
In addition to the reconstructed fort, the park also has a campground, swimming pool, hiking trails, mini-golf, picnic shelters and a gift shop. Fort Boonesborough is located near Richmond. From Interstate 75, take Exit 95 to KY 627. On I-64, exit at Winchester to KY 627.
