Treasurer Metcalf Highlights STABLE Kentucky on National ABLE Savings Day

FRANKFORT, Ky. (August 12, 2026) – August 14 marks National ABLE Savings Day, highlighting the importance of Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) accounts and the financial opportunities they provide to individuals with disabilities and their families.

“STABLE Kentucky gives Kentuckians with disabilities an opportunity to save, invest and plan for their future while protecting access to important benefits like SSI and Medicaid,” said Kentucky State Treasurer Mark H. Metcalf. “We want to make sure Kentuckians and their families know there is a tool available to help them build financial security and greater independence.”

STABLE Kentucky, administered by the Kentucky State Treasurer’s Office, allows eligible Kentuckians with disabilities to save and invest for qualified disability-related expenses while maintaining eligibility for certain federal means-tested benefits. Account funds can be used for expenses including housing, transportation, education, employment training and support, assistive technology, health and wellness, and other qualified disability-related expenses.

STABLE Kentucky offers four investment options, along with a STABLE Savings Option that is FDIC-insured. Contributions can come from the account owner, family members, friends, employers or other sources. Earnings on investments are tax-deferred, and withdrawals are tax-free when used for qualified disability-related expenses.

In 2026, the ABLE Age Adjustment Act expanded eligibility for ABLE accounts to individuals whose disability began before age 46, allowing more Americans to benefit from these savings tools.
