FRANKFORT, Ky. (Sept. 9, 2026) – Today, Gov. Andy Beshear announced that more than 30,000 Kentuckians have completed creating a myDrive online account, unlocking convenient drivers licensing services that can save them time and trips to a driver licensing office.
“We’ve made improving licensing a priority so that Kentuckians are spending less time waiting in line and more time getting where they need to go,” said Gov. Beshear. “By completing their myDrive registration, Kentuckians can save themselves trips to the licensing office and we can continue to see those average wait times drop even further.”
Team Kentucky encourages all drivers to sign up or complete account verification to access eligible online services, like changing an address, replacing an ID or renewing a license.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s (KYTC) new, modernized driver licensing system, Kentucky Information Network for Driver Licensing, replaced the state’s 40-year-old backend system in June and expanded online service options available to Kentuckians at myDrive.ky.gov.
While more than 115,000 Kentuckians have created myDrive logins, about 26% have verified their accounts by linking their login to their driving record on file – a crucial step needed before using online services.
“With myDrive, Kentuckians have more convenient options to take care of licensing needs on their time, and we want to see more drivers enjoy the benefits of having an account,” said KYTC Secretary Rebecca Goodman. “The system upgrade gives licensing staff modern tools to better serve Kentuckians as we commit to building a better service experience for years to come.”
To complete the verification process, a user will connect their account using a “Letter ID” – a user-specific, multi-digit code that is mailed to the address on file or printed on the temporary ID document given to customers at the end of an in-office visit. A Letter ID can be requested:
- When initially creating a myDrive account
- By logging in to your myDrive account
- By visiting any Driver Licensing Regional Office
“Signing up for a myDrive account now is a smart step to save you time and trips later,” said Deputy Secretary Jeremy Slinker. “Even if you aren’t due to renew for years, setting up a verified online account early means you can quickly access online services like replacing an ID if you lose your wallet or updating a home address if you move.”
Licensing Improvements and Reduced Wait Times
myDrive accounts are the latest step Team Kentucky has taken to improve the licensing experience. Those steps also include hiring 125 contracted full-time staff last year and launching a new line management and text check-in system that drastically cut office wait times when demand grew last year due to new vision screening requirements, REAL ID enforcement and new permit eligibility for 15 year olds.
Thanks to those efforts, average wait times at driver licensing regional offices statewide were just 9 minutes for walk-ins and 10 minutes for appointments in August, down from an average of 49 minutes for walk-ins and 25 minutes for appointments in Spring of 2025.
Kentuckians who require an office visit, like requesting a Kentucky license or REAL ID for the first-time, are encouraged to pre-apply on myDrive.ky.gov to save time during their visit. As of August, 50% of Kentucky IDs are REAL ID compliant.
