FRANKFORT, Ky. (Jan. 18, 2024) – The Northpoint Training Center (NTC) in Burgin passed its recent Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) audit. Signed into law Sept. 4, 2003, PREA is intended to address the detection, prevention, reduction, and prosecution of sexual abuse and harassment in correctional facilities throughout the country.
The audit was conducted by Lori Fadorick, a PREA auditor contracted by the American Correctional Association.
“I had the pleasure of auditing Northpoint Training Center for the second time,” said Fadorick. “Then, as now, the staff were incredibly welcoming and professional. I was particularly impressed with how the facility and staff have adapted to the changes in the inmate population and the mission of the facility. It is evident from both staff and inmate interactions that the facility is very diligent in ensuring the safety of the population with an environment consistent with these principles.”
Interim Deputy Commissioner Scott Jordan praised the hard work of the facility in maintaining compliance. “The work of Warden Mazza and his team, along with the support of our Compliance Division, has resulted in the continued dedication to and proper management of PREA at the Northpoint Training Center,” said Jordan. “Job well done.”
Agency PREA Coordinator Pamela Clayton emphasized that PREA compliance is a continuous process and not easily maintained. “Sustained PREA compliance requires effort from all levels at the facility,” said Clayton. “It takes buy-in from everyone, and it is clear that NTC places a high priority on the safety of the offenders at the facility.”
“NTC staff go above and beyond to protect the inmates under our watch,” said Warden Kevin Mazza. “To exceed standards in any audit shows the commitment and dedication of our staff. I couldn’t be more proud of the teamwork at NTC.”
PREA audits consist of 45 national standards that ensure compliance with all facets of this federal legislation. The last PREA audit conducted at NTC was in 2021, which also resulted in a passing score.
