Craig Hughes Named Warden at Southeast State Correctional Complex

FRANKFORT, Ky. (Dec. 13, 2021) – Kentucky Department of Corrections Deputy Commissioner Randy White announced today that Craig Hughes has been named warden at Southeast State Correctional Complex (SSCC) in Floyd County. Hughes has served as a deputy warden at Northpoint Training Center since October 2017.

“Craig Hughes is a highly experienced professional with nearly 23 years of experience in all aspects of facility management which includes security, programs and operations,” said White.  “He presents the distinct combination of experience, character, and leadership the department is seeking to professionally manage an adult correctional facility.”

Hughes began his career with the Department of Corrections as a correctional officer at Northpoint Training Center in 1999. He was promoted to a classification and treatment officer in 2001, unit administrator I in 2004, and unit administrator II in 2006. During this time, Hughes was also a home incarceration program coordinator, interim grievance coordinator, and active member of the Corrections Emergency Response Team (CERT).

In 2015, Hughes was promoted to administrative section supervisor at Northpoint. In this role he served as the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) compliance manager, monitoring all PREA actions to ensure compliance and assisting with PREA audits for other institutions. Prior to this position he had gained experience as a PREA retaliation monitor and investigator. Additionally, he was certified as a Department of Justice PREA auditor.

Hughes received his bachelor’s degree in ministry leadership from Johnson University in 1993. He was the recipient of DOC Achievement Awards in 2009 and 2017. He is a 2012 graduate of the Commissioner’s Executive Leadership Program and an active member of the Herrington Lake Chapter of the Kentucky Council on Crime and Delinquency (KCCD).
