Kentucky Attorney General Announces Sentencing for Convicted Logan County Man Who Threatened Prosecutor and Judge

FRANKFORT, Ky. (Sept. 17, 2025)– Attorney General Russell Coleman announced today that action by the Attorney General’s Special Prosecutions Unit (SPU) resulted in two felony convictions of Melvin Haley, 44, for threatening a Logan County prosecutor and judge.

Earlier this week, Haley pleaded guilty in Logan County Circuit Court to two counts of Retaliating Against Participant in Legal Process (Class D Felony). In September, Haley made threats against the Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney prosecuting a criminal domestic violence case against him and the circuit judge presiding. Haley was convicted in that case for Strangulation Second Degree (Class D Felony) and sentenced to three years.

As a condition of the plea, Haley was sentenced to an additional year and required to remain 500 feet away from the Logan County Courthouse, unless required to be there for a legitimate reason. He shall have no contact with the prosecutor or judge.

“Threatening our prosecutors in this Commonwealth will continue to result in serious consequences,” said Attorney General Coleman. “The Office of the Attorney General will stand firm to help protect Kentucky’s outstanding prosecutors, law enforcement and judges.”

The Logan County Sheriff’s Office investigated the case. Assistant Attorney General Richie Kemp prosecuted the case on behalf of the Commonwealth.
