HENDERSON, Ky. – From children’s art to oral histories of African-American residents, Henderson County will be brimming with cultural exhibits and activities during January.

Here’s a sampler of some of the events on the docket for January in Henderson:

Jan. 1-Feb. 29: Early Pioneers of Henderson County Exhibit, Henderson Depot Community Room. A collection of portraits, memorabilia, and occupational tools will be displayed with biographies of some of Henderson’s earliest settlers. Info: 270-830-9707 or www.hendersondepot.org. 

Jan. 1-31: "A Fresh Start" art exhibit, Henderson County Public Library, Henderson, Ky. A mixed-media art exhibit produced by children 5 to 13 years. Info: www.mspemsartforkids.com.

Jan. 5-March 3: “Everyday People Part 2” art exhibit, Audubon Museum, John James Audubon State Park, Henderson, Ky. Pictorial exhibit and oral histories offering a glimpse of life, past and present, of Henderson, Union, and Webster Counties’ African American people. Jan. 18: Audubon Adult Artist Retreat, Audubon Museum, John James Audubon State Park, Henderson. Beginners to advanced artists are invited to attend the monthly all-day artist retreats at the Audubon Museum. A day of fun, creativity and critique. Guest speakers and special programs vary with each retreat. Bring your art of choice and supplies. Ages 18 and up. Pre-registration is required. 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Program Fee: $15. Jan. 26: "Miss Dinnie Thompson: No Ordinary Woman," Audubon Museum, John James Audubon State Park, Henderson. Erma Bush will portray Miss Dinnie Thompson in the Kentucky Chautauqua program in conjunction with the "Everyday People Part 2" art exhibit. Miss Dinnie was born a slave but went on to prove that she was no ordinary woman after emancipation in 1865. Presented by John James Audubon State Park and the Kentucky Humanities Council.
