ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. – Hardin County will be hosting a variety of cultural events in February in connection with the kickoff of the Abraham Lincoln bicentennial birthday celebration.
Elizabethtown, which is only a 15 mile drive from Lincoln’s birthplace near Hodgenville, will be the site of two concerts, a dramatic interpretation and a public forum connected with the celebration of Lincoln’s birth on Feb. 12, 1809.
Several of Lincoln’s ancestors and relatives lived in Hardin County, and every Thursday from June through September walking tours visit sites connected with the 16th president’s family and other points of historic interest in Elizabethtown.
Here is a list of Lincoln events taking place in Hardin County in the coming weeks:
• Karen V. McCord as Harriet Tubman presents Journey to Freedom: Songs of the Underground Railroad at the Hardin County History Museum at 7 p.m. on Feb. 9. For more information call 270-763-8339.
• The Hardin County Performing Arts Center is presenting The Lexington Philharmonic in Lincoln’s Legacy: a Musical Tribute at 8 p.m. Feb. 12. Jim Getty will provide the narration and dramatic interpretations. The Stephen Foster Singers will also be performing era-appropriate a cappella choral selections. • “NAACP – Building a More Perfect Union – Lincoln’s Challenge to Overcome States’ Rights Still Hampers Equal Opportunity for Americans” will take place at the Hardin County History Museum on Feb. 16 at 1 p.m. Call 270-763-8339 for information.
• Elizabethtown Area Sacred Community Choir presents My Neighbor’s Keeper: With Malice Toward None, a cantata based on Abraham Lincoln’s commitment to freedom, at 3 p.m. on Feb. 24.
