E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park Welcomes Spring With Three Plant Life Events
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Whether you have a green thumb or not, E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park has three upcoming events perfectly suited for spring and anyone interested in plant life.
The park will host a botany workshop on April 1 and April 8 from 6-8 p.m. If you’ve always wanted to learn more about local plants and how to identify them, then this is the workshop for you. The park naturalist will conduct an introduction to botany workshop open to all plant enthusiasts.
Over the course of two sessions, you will learn how to identify plants, study plant family characteristics, and explore the plant communities in the area. A hike around the park will allow participants to observe plants in the field. No prior botany knowledge or skills required. The program fee is $25 and advanced registration is required. Call Tessa Edelen at 502-429-7270 for information.
The second event is an “Invasive Plant Removal Volunteer Day” on April 26 and comes just after Earth Day. Celebrate by getting rid of some nasty weeds at E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park. Join park naturalist Tessa Edelen in pulling up invasive honeysuckle vines from 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteers will meet in front of the Activities Building at the park’s main entrance off of Freys Hill Road. Bring your own water and dress for the weather. If you have tools such as hedge clippers or hand pruners, please bring them. Otherwise, tools will be provided.
And on April 27, the park will host a “Wildflower Hunt Hike” at 10 a.m. Dennis Crowley of the Kentucky Trails Association and park naturalist Tessa Edelen are co-leading the hike. Hikers will meet in front of the Activities Building at the park’s main entrance off Freys Hill Road. Bring your own water and dress for the weather. The hike will take about two hours and will traverse easy terrain.
The park is located in eastern Jefferson County on Freys Hill Road, off of Westport Road. It is just south of the Gene Snyder Freeway. For information, call the park at 502-429-7270.
