FRANKFORT, Ky. – If you like to take scenic drives in the country to learn about historic and natural sites, the Kentucky State Parks have an event for you. The parks are sponsoring two road rallies in March that involve three parks.
A road rally is a driving tour in the country on paved roads where teams earn points by checking off a list of scavenger hunt items and correctly answering questions. Points and prizes are awarded to the participants.
The first is the Iron Furnace Road Rally scheduled March 9-11 at Greenbo Lake State Resort Park and Carter Caves State Resort Park in northeastern Kentucky. This course includes visits to beautiful covered bridges, train tunnels, steel bridges of the past, a 20-ton boulder dislodged from a massive earthquake almost 200 years ago, private tours of Grayson Lake Dam and the Greenup Locks and Dam, and of course a visit to five iron furnaces which were an important part of Kentucky's industry of the 19th century.
Registration price: $70 if package not selected. Package price is $281.22 single and $343.79 double. Both packages include registration. Packages include two night's lodging at Greenbo Lake, one night's lodging at Carter Caves, dinner Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, breakfast Monday and Tuesday. The second event will be the Rockhouse Bottom Road Rally on March 28-30 at Dale Hollow Lake State Resort Park near Burkesville. This Rockhouse Bottom road trip includes a river crossing by way of a ferry, three historic churches built in the early 1800’s, a Civil War encampment site, a 1920’s general store still in use today, the first oil well in Kentucky, the amazing Rockhouse Natural Bridge, a chance to feed three-foot long trout at a fish hatchery, a drive across Wolf Creek Dam, amazing views of a spectacular waterfall, and drive on some country roads in the most beautiful parts of Southern Kentucky. A package is offered based on double occupancy for $421.79 that includes two nights lodging, Friday night dinner and program, Saturday breakfast, Saturday dinner and magic show, Sunday breakfast, Sunday dinner, and registration fees are included.
