Thursday, June 26, 2008 As residents of Breathitt, Estill and Lee counties prepare for the annual 50-Mile Yard Sale along KY 52 on Friday and Saturday, July 4-5, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is urging motorists to use caution during the event.
- ROAD CLOSURE NOTICE: Old KY 15 bridge near Vancleve to be closed June 16-17
Thursday, June 12, 2008 As part of a project to clean, paint and repair a number of bridges along the KY 15 corridor in Breathitt, Knott and Perry counties, the bridge carrying Old KY 15 across Frozen Creek near Vancleve in Breathitt County will tentatively be closed Monday and Tuesday, July 16-17.
- Area motorists should be alert for bicycles this weekend as Tour of the Red River Gorge comes to the region June 14-15
Monday, June 09, 2008 Motorists in five of the Department of Highways District 10's counties should be on the lookout this weekend for an influx of bicycles, as the Red River Gorge and surrounding region plays host to the third annual Tour of the Red River Gorge and Pedals and Blooms Festival.
The event will combine street festivals with bicycle rallies and races through Estill, Lee, Menifee, Powell and Wolfe counties. The event will take place June 14-15.
- Volunteers help preserve Kentucky’s scenic beauty during Adopt-a-Highway ‘Summer Scrub’
Monday, June 09, 2008 Volunteers will be out in full force next week to spring clean highways in Breathitt, Estill, Lee, Magoffin, Menifee, Morgan, Owsley, Perry, Powell and Wolfe counties. The Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) announced today that the Adopt-a-Highway Summer Scrub Week will be held June 15-21.
- Delays likely on KY 7 in Morgan County on Thursday, June 19
Tuesday, June 03, 2008 Personnel from the Kentucky Department of Highways, Morgan County Maintenance, will install a drainage pipe on KY 7, West Liberty-Sandy Hook Road, on Thursday, June 19. The work will take place near mile marker 10, or between Wrigley and the Elliott County line. The project will begin around 9 a.m. and will continue until approximately 3 p.m. During this time, the road will not be closed to through traffic, but motorists can expect lengthy delays and should plan their trips accordingly.

Monday, June 02, 2008 Construction continues on a $34.8 million project to relocate KY 7 between Jeff and Viper in Perry County. While there will continue to be periodic temporary delays, there are no plans for a long-term closure of KY 7 at this time.
- ROAD CLOSURE NOTICE: KY 2021 in Perry County to be closed Monday and Tuesday, June 16-17
Monday, June 02, 2008 Personnel from the Kentucky Department of Highways, Perry County Maintenance, will install a drainage pipe on KY 2021, Couch Town Road, on Monday and Tuesday, June 16 and 17. The project will begin around 8 a.m. on June 16 and will continue until approximately 4 p.m. on June 17. During this time, the road will be closed to through traffic and motorists should plan their trips accordingly.
- New flashing beacons installed near Beattyville Elementary School
Friday, April 18, 2008 The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has installed new flashing beacons and school zone signs in the vicinity of Beattyville Elementary School in Lee County.
The additions include new overhead flashers at the crosswalk on KY 11 (Broadway) in front of the school, as well as two new school zone signs with flashers.
- Drive Smart enforcement blitz planned April 13-19 for KY 15 corridor in Breathitt, Perry and Wolfe counties
Friday, April 11, 2008 The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s Department of Transportation Safety has a message for motorists traveling KY 15 in Breathitt, Perry and Wolfe counties: Wear your seat belts, obey the speed limit, and don’t drive while intoxicated.
To help reinforce that message and reduce the number of traffic accidents, the Cabinet's Drive Smart program will be coordinating a KY 15 Safety Corridor enforcement blitz in the three counties during a weeklong effort beginning Sunday, April 13.
- Adopt-a-Highway groups poised to ‘spring clean’ roadsides, help preserve scenic beauty of the commonwealth
Tuesday, March 18, 2008 Volunteers will be out in full force next week to spring clean highways in Breathitt, Estill, Lee, Magoffin, Menifee, Morgan, Owsley, Perry, Powell and Wolfe counties. The Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) announced today that the Adopt-a-Highway Spring Clean Week will be held March 23-29.
- Approximately 40 people attend public meeting on KY 30 reconstruction project in Breathitt, Magoffin counties
Monday, March 10, 2008 On Tuesday, March 4, personnel from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Department of Highways District 10 office conducted a public informational meeting on the proposed reconstruction of KY 30 crossing the mountain at the Breathitt-Magoffin county line.
Approximately 40 residents of the area and other concerned citizens attended the meeting at the Middle Fork Elementary School in Magoffin County to view a presentation by District 10 personnel and project consultants, receive information on the project, and provide their input into the design of this highway project. The project will realign approximately 1.5 miles of KY 30 between milepoint 37 in Breathitt County and milepoint 0.75 in Magoffin County to provide a straighter, wider and less steep route. Presently, the highway is narrow, crooked, steep and prone to slips and dropoffs.
- Bridge painting project on KY 15 to resume next week, traffic delays possible in Perry County
Monday, February 18, 2008 Work will resume next week on a $4.6 million project to paint and repair several bridges along the KY 15 corridor in Breathitt, Knott and Perry Counties.
Weather permitting, the project will resume in Perry County with work beginning on the bridge carrying KY 15 over KY 80 and KY 550 (Combs Road) and the North Fork of the Kentucky River north of Hazard.

Monday, February 18, 2008 Residents of Breathitt and Magoffin counties are invited to attend a public informational meeting to discuss a project to improve KY 30 at the county line.
The meeting will be held Tuesday, March 4 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Middle Fork Elementary School on KY 30 in Magoffin County.
- Free child safety seat inspections coming to Breathitt County
Friday, February 01, 2008 The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet will sponsor a child safety seat inspection in Breathitt County on Friday, Feb. 8. The inspection will be held at the Jackson Fire Department, 11 Fire Station Lane, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Inspections are free and take approximately 20 minutes per seat.
- Approximately 200 people attend public meeting on proposed KY 715 improvements in Wolfe County
Friday, February 01, 2008 Approximately 200 area residents and local officials attended a public informational meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 29, concerning possible improvements to KY 715 in Wolfe County. Those attending the meeting at Rogers Elementary School were given information on the proposed project by representatives from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and Wilbur Smith Associates, the cabinet’s engineering consultants.

Thursday, January 17, 2008 Residents of Wolfe and nearby counties are invited to attend a public informational meeting to discuss proposed highway improvements along the KY 715 corridor between KY 11 at Zachariah and the Mountain Parkway at Pine Ridge.
The meeting will be held Tuesday, Jan. 29 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Rogers Elementary School, 1750 KY 715, Rogers.

Friday, December 14, 2007 On Thursday, Dec. 13, personnel from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Department of Highways District 10 office conducted a public informational meeting on the proposed reconstruction of the interchange of the Mountain Parkway and KY 1057 at Exit 18 in Powell County.
Approximately 20 residents of the area and other concerned citizens attended the meeting at the Clay City Elementary School to view a presentation by District 10 personnel and project consultants, receive information on the project, and provide their input into the design of this highway project.
- Transportation Cabinet crews preparing for first expected winter weather of the season
Tuesday, December 04, 2007 Crews from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s Department of Highways are preparing for the first predicted winter weather of the 2007-08 season. In anticipation of snow later this evening and tomorrow, crews are pre-treating highways in Breathitt, Estill, Lee, Magoffin, Menifee, Morgan, Owsley, Perry, Powell and Wolfe counties with brine to help combat accumulating shows should they occur.

Tuesday, December 04, 2007 Residents of Powell and nearby counties are invited to attend a public informational meeting to discuss a project to add an eastbound exit ramp and a westbound entrance ramp to the partial interchange at Exit 18 on the Bert T. Combs Mountain Parkway at Clay City.

Monday, October 15, 2007 Drivers who use KY 15 between Vancleve and Jackson in Breathitt County should be aware of a traffic pattern change due to the KY 15 relocation project.
On Tuesday, Oct. 16, traffic will be routed onto two lanes of the new four-lane KY 15 alignment.

Monday, October 15, 2007 Governor Ernie Fletcher and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet are continuing their efforts to provide a safe and reliable transportation system in Kentucky through the awarding of three road construction contracts totaling nearly $8.8 million in Perry County.
The contracts are for one bridge replacement project and two resurfacing projects totaling 6.19 miles on two Perry County highways.

- Drivers Alerted to Traffic Pattern Change on KY 11-15 in Powell County
Monday, October 01, 2007 Drivers who use KY 11 and KY 15 between Slade and Stanton in Powell County should be aware of a traffic pattern change due to a bridge replacement project near Nada. Traffic has been diverted to a temporary bridge to carry KY 11 and KY 15 across the Middle Fork of the Red River. The existing bridge will be removed and replaced with a new $1.3 million span. The project location is 0.3 miles east of KY 1639, between Nada and Bowen.
- Transportation Cabinet to remove signs illegally placed on state right of way beginning Oct. 8
Friday, September 28, 2007 With the November general election slightly more than a month away, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) personnel are noticing illegally placed campaign signs appearing on state right of way on an increasing basis.
Since these signs can interfere with motorist safety and impede mowing and other maintenance operations along state roads, Highway Commissioner Marc D. Williams has directed maintenance personnel to remove these illegal encroachments on state rights of way. Candidates and their supporters who have improperly and illegally placed signs on state right of way should take notice that maintenance personnel in each of Highway District 10's 10 counties will be removing these signs beginning Monday, Oct. 8.

Friday, September 28, 2007 Motorists traveling KY 15 through Knott County between Hazard and Whitesburg should be prepared for delays in the vicinity of Carr Fork Lake, as work continues on a $4.6 million bridge maintenance and repair project in Knott, Perry and Breathitt counties. For approximately the next six weeks, traffic will be reduced to one lane and controlled by temporary traffic signals at the bridge carrying KY 15 across Carr Fork Lake at milepoint 5.63 in Knott County.

The project will begin between 8 and 9 a.m., after morning school bus traffic has passed, and will continue until approximately noon. - Motorists Reminded to ‘Move It;' Quick Clearance Signs Installed Across Commonwealth
Monday, August 13, 2007 Motorists along Kentucky’s interstates and parkways, including the Bert T. Combs Mountain Parkway in Powell, Wolfe, Morgan and Magoffin counties, will soon be reminded to “move it” over to the emergency lane if they are involved in a minor fender bender. House Bill 272, known as the Quick Clearance Bill, was passed by the General Assembly and signed into law by Gov. Ernie Fletcher last year. It requires motorists to move damaged vehicles out of the traffic lanes of the interstate or parkway following an accident as long as there are no injuries and the vehicles are able to be moved.

Tuesday, June 05, 2007 Work will begin this week on a year-long project to reconstruct KY 699 between mile markers 0 and 2 in the Leatherwood area of Perry County.
In a unique public-private partnership, Blue Diamond Coal Company plans to conduct mining operations in the area and has agreed to relocate this stretch of KY 699. The new highway will eliminate nearly one mile of crooked, narrow roadway that has several breaks and embankment failures, and replace it with a road with wider lanes and a less steep grade.

- Seat Belt Usage Reminder Sign Installed At Estill County High School
Wednesday, May 23, 2007 Drivers leaving the grounds of Estill County High School now have another reminder to wear their seat belts. The Kentucky Department of Highways today erected a sign at the school to deliver the “buckle up” message to student drivers, faculty and staff members, and visitors to the school.
As part of the Transportation Cabinet’s Drive Smart program, the reminder sign was placed at the exit to the ECHS campus near Irvine. The goal is to encourage students, parents and school employees to follow Kentucky law and use their seat belts.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) personnel are noticing illegally placed campaign signs appearing on state right of way on an increasing basis. Since these signs can interfere with motorist safety and impede mowing and other maintenance operations along state roads, Highway Commissioner Marc D. Williams has directed maintenance personnel to remove these illegal encroachments on state rights of way. Candidates and their supporters who have improperly and illegally placed signs on state right of way should take notice that maintenance personnel in each of Highway District 10's 10 counties will be removing these signs beginning Monday, May 7.

Monday, April 16, 2007 Spring is the time when flowers burst out of the ground and trees bloom, turning Kentucky’s hillsides into walls of bright colors.
It is also the time when orange cones and barrels sprout along the Commonwealth’s roadsides, as the highway construction season gets into gear.
That’s why the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is stressing work zone safety this month in an effort to reduce the number of injury and fatality accidents in areas where construction and maintenance projects are ongoing. The effort is intended to protect motorists as well as construction workers.

- Temporary Traffic Signals Installed on KY 11 in Natural Bridge State Park Vicinity Due to Bridge Repairs
Monday, April 09, 2007 Motorists who use KY 11 in the vicinity of Natural Bridge State Resort Park in Powell County should be alerted to changing traffic patterns in the area due to construction work on the bridge leading to the park’s lodge.
Temporary traffic signals have been placed on KY 11 to control traffic on the bridge crossing the Middle Fork of the Red River. Traffic on the bridge will be restricted to one lane while repairs are being made to the bridge deck. Temporary signals have also been placed on the opposite side of the bridge, on the roads leading to the lodge and the sky lift.

Friday, February 23, 2007 The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s Department of Transportation Safety has a message for basketball fans traveling to the 14th Regional high school tournaments this year: Wear your seat belts, obey the speed limit, and don’t drive while intoxicated.
To help reinforce that message and reduce the number of traffic accidents, the Cabinet's Drive Smart Program will be coordinating the KY 15 Safety Corridor Blitz during a weeklong effort beginning Sunday March 4 in Wolfe, Breathitt and Perry counties.
- Preliminary Work on KY 451 Bridge Replacement Will Result in Street Closures in Hazard Beginning March 5
Wednesday, February 21, 2007 Beginning Monday, March 5, contractors will begin demolishing buildings and removing underground storage tanks to clear right of way for the pending replacement of the Home Lumber Bridge on KY 451 in downtown Hazard. This work will result in the closure of Bridge Street for approximately one week. Also during this time, motorists can expect possible delays and lane closures on Main Street and High Street in the immediate area of the work zone.
- Work Begins on Mountain Parkway Bridge Project at Exit 72; Travel Delays Likely
Tuesday, February 20, 2007 Work is beginning this week on a $1.4 million safety improvement project to replace the deck of the bridge carrying the Bert T. Combs Mountain Parkway over KY 30 at Exit 72 in Magoffin County.
Motorists who travel the Mountain Parkway at this location can expect delays this week while construction crews place barrier walls and traffic signals to be used for traffic control during the project. Flaggers will periodically stop traffic while the setup work progresses this week.
Once the barrier walls and signals are in place, traffic in this area will be restricted to one lane and controlled with traffic signals for the next five to six months while the project is ongoing. One 16-foot travel lane will be provided as contractors remove the existing bridge deck, make modifications to the support piers, and construct a new bridge deck.

Tuesday, January 30, 2007 As part of Kentucky’s observance of Child Passenger Safety Month, the Transportation Cabinet’s Drive Smart program is sponsoring free child safety seat inspections in 26 cities across the state.
In District 10 of the Department of Highways, inspection locations include Beattyville and West Liberty. Inspections will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 13 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Morgan County State Highway Maintenance Garage on KY 191, and on Wednesday, Feb. 28 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Beattyville-Lee County Fire Department on KY 11 north.

Thursday, January 25, 2007 Crews from the Department of Highways District 10 are out spot treating state highways in the district’s 10 counties this morning, as snow has arrived in the area.
Light to moderate snow is being reported across the region. Crews are treating trouble spots such as bridges, intersections, hills, curves and areas of high elevation. Minor snow accumulations are being noted on rooftops and grassy areas in the higher elevations, but roads are generally clear with wet pavement reported. Highways may be partly covered in a few isolated areas. Drivers should be alert to the possibility of encountering slick spots, and use extra caution on bridges and overpasses.

Wednesday, January 24, 2007 In order to enhance safety along an accident-prone stretch of KY 82 in Estill County, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet today installed a new LED (light emitting diode) curve warning sign. This solar-powered LED-enhanced sign was placed near milepoint 4.5, just south of the Powell County line, for the benefit of northbound traffic in the vicinity of Salem Baptist Church. In addition, the advisory speed for this curve has been lowered from 35 mph to 25 mph
