FRANKFORT, Ky. — University of Kentucky Endowed Professor of Voice, U.K. Opera Theatre Director and Kentucky Arts Council Vice-Chair, Everett McCorvey has recently been elected by the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies (NASAA) membership to serve on its board of directors for a three-year term ending September 30, 2009.

NASAA is the membership organization that unites, represents and serves the nation’s state and jurisdictional arts agencies.  All 50 states and six U.S. jurisdictions (American Samoa, District of Columbia, Guam, Northern Marianas, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands) have created arts agencies, similar to the Kentucky Arts Council, committed to advance a meaningful role for the arts and culture in the lives of individuals, families and communities.

McCorvey, a native of Montgomery, Alabama, received his degrees from the University of Alabama, including a Doctorate of Musical Arts. As a tenor soloist, Dr. McCorvey has performed in many venues, including the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. McCorvey is also the founder and director of the American Spiritual Ensemble, a group of 16 professional singers performing spirituals and other compositions of African-American composers, touring annually throughout the U.S. and Spain.

McCorvey was appointed by the Governor to the board of directors of the Kentucky Arts Council in 2000, and reappointed in 2004 to serve a second four-year term.  He is currently vice-chair of the Kentucky Arts Council.
