FRANKFORT, Ky. ─ While parents shop at Kentucky Crafted: The Market, children will have the opportunity to build their own instruments, experience the art of handweaving, and learn about the Kentucky childhoods of Abraham Lincoln and Mary Todd Lincoln.
Sponsored by the Kentucky Arts Council, Kentucky Crafted: The Market features over 300 exhibitors of traditional and contemporary art and craft along with authentic folk art, Kentucky related books, musical recordings and specialty food products at the Kentucky Exposition Center, South Wing B, in Louisville, March 8-9, 2008.
Children can participate in hands-on, educational art and craft activities at the Children and Family Traditions Area (Exhibit Area F, aisle 100).
People of all ages are welcome to learn about the tradition of weaving and practice basic weaving techniques with The Little Loom House, a non-profit educational art venue and historic landmark in Louisville.
In connection with the exhibit, Made to be Played: Traditional Art of Kentucky Luthiers, featured at the Market, the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft and the Kentucky Arts Council will offer children ages 5-10 the chance to make their own stringed instruments. Participants will use rubber bands, screws, wood and wire to construct the instruments, and in the process they will learn about how strings vibrate to make pitch. Classes are limited in size, however, and require registration in the Children and Family Traditions Area.
The Kentucky Historical Society will introduce children to hands-on activities from Abraham Lincoln and Mary Todd Lincoln’s childhoods, including quill writing and making sum books and journals.
