Frankfort, KY - It may look like an 18-wheeler-tractor-trailer, but the Kentucky Historical Society's HistoryMobile contains a popular exhibition on Daniel Boone. Sporting a new "skin," this traveling museum will launch its 2007 tour to more than 20 locations throughout the state at the Governor's Derby Breakfast on May 5 on the Capitol grounds in Frankfort.
"The HistoryMobile is a favorite in communities around the commonwealth, making traditional appearances at the Derby Breakfast and State Fair among other places each year," says Karla Nicholson, director of education at KHS. "We have lined up an ambitious 2007 schedule with the HistoryMobile visiting the state's Welcome Centers, major community festivals and selected state parks."
The 2007 HistoryMobile tour also marks a farewell for the Legend of Daniel Boone exhibition featured for the past several years. Abraham Lincoln will be the focus of the next HistoryMobile exhibition during the 2008-2010 Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Celebration. The Lincoln HistoryMobile exhibition will debut at the February 12, 2008, national bicentennial kick-off event in Hodgenville.
At the Governor's Derby Breakfast, the Kentucky Historical Society will give families the opportunity to make Derby hats and race Derby hobbyhorses at the HistoryMobile on the east lawn behind the Capitol Building, just across the street from the Governor's Derby Breakfast tent. Activities will be open between 8 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.
Visitors can also hop on the shuttle service provided for the Derby Breakfast participants and visit the Kentucky Historical Society's Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History, open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Free family activities are offered from 1 to 4 p.m. Featured experiences include exhibitions Our New Kentucky Home: Immigrant Experiences and A Kentucky Journey, museum theatre performances of Birds of Passage: Vincent Scopa of "Tallie Holler" at 1:30 and 3:30 p.m., and tours of the Old State Capitol and the Kentucky Military History Museum.
The Kentucky Historical Society is located at 100 West Broadway in Frankfort. Admission is $4 for adults and $2 for children ages 6-18.
