Frankfort, KY - If delving into your family's history is one of your New Year's resolutions, the Kentucky Historical Society provides a great way to get started with its quarterly family-history journal, free monthly workshops, and research resources.
The Kentucky Historical Society publishes a quarterly genealogical journal, Kentucky Ancestors, which is one of several benefits available to members of the Society. Free family-history workshops are available every second Saturday at the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History in Frankfort. And on Tuesdays through Saturdays, family historians can visit the Martin F. Schmidt Research Library at the Center for Kentucky History. The library features extensive family- history files and resources, in addition to staff that assist with genealogical investigations.
The upcoming January 12 free family-history workshop demonstrates how researchers can gather oral histories, including how to create a list of questions and tips for handling equipment. Attendees will also learn more about oral histories of World War II veterans. The workshop will be presented by the Kentucky Historical Society on Saturday, January 12, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The session will be held at the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History in Frankfort. Registration before noon on Friday, January 11, is required. Workshop participation is complimentary. Kentucky Ancestors, the Society's genealogical quarterly, has been preserving and promoting the history of Kentucky families since 1965. Kentucky Ancestors publishes genealogical research, photographs, family and government records, and other genealogical information. Features in past issues include submitted information from family Bibles, articles documenting early Kentucky families that went west, and presentations of old family photographs. The publication is one of the benefits of membership, and members may submit queries as a networking tool to learn more about their own family histories. The Martin F. Schmidt Research Library of the Kentucky Historical Society houses over 90,000 published works, dealing primarily with history and genealogy, as well as over 16,000 reels of microfilm and tens of thousands of vertical files of collected and contributed research. It is staffed by librarians who can assist novice and more experienced genealogists alike.
