  • KHS Boone Day Celebrates "Magic" of Churchill Weavers Collection

    This year's Boone Day celebration, a proud Kentucky Historical Society (KHS) tradition for more than a century, is scheduled for Saturday, June 7, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History in Frankfort. Held annually at KHS since 1897, Boone Day celebrates June 7, 1769, when Daniel Boone first saw Kentucky.
  • KHS Presents Churchill Weavers Preservation Exhibition Opening May 10

    The Churchill Weavers collection, including products, patterns, and tools from the largest handweaving operation in the country, is the focus of a new preservation exhibition at the Kentucky Historical Society (KHS). Magic in the Weaving: The Churchill Weavers Collection Revealed opens on Saturday, May 10, and will remain on exhibit until September 6, 2008. This preservation exhibition shows how curators and archivists are saving the collection for future generations and is featured in several KHS programs in the coming months.

    More than one hundred student historians are headed to Frankfort for Kentucky's National History Day contest on Saturday, April 26, at the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History.
  • Nominations Sought for American History Teacher of the Year

    Know an American history teacher who deserves to be honored? Nominations are being accepted for the American History Teacher of the Year, an initiative of the Preserve America program sponsored by the White House. For 2008, the award is open to any full- time middle or high school American history teacher (the 2009 contest will be for elementary American history teachers), and nominations can be made by a department head, school director, or principal. The winning teacher will receive a $1,000 cash prize, an American History Teacher of the Year plaque, and a collection of resource materials for his or her school library.
  • The Contested Legacy of Jefferson Davis Symposium Scheduled for June 27

    Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederate States of America and a Kentucky native, is the topic of a day- long symposium set for Friday, June 27, at the Kentucky Historical Society in Frankfort. This year marks the 200th anniversary of Davis's birth.

    The Kentucky Historical Society, the Historical Confederation of Kentucky, Northern Kentucky heritage organizations, and Northern Kentucky University will present the 15th annual Northern Kentucky Regional History Day on Saturday, April 5, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. ET, on the campus of Northern Kentucky University in Highland Heights.
  • Kentucky Junior Historians Convene in Frankfort

    More than 500 student historians are headed to Frankfort for the forty-sixth annual Kentucky Junior Historical Society convention. Students from every corner of the commonwealth in grades K-12 have prepared projects in categories including historical exhibit, genealogical research, photography, performance, and art. Other competitions, including the fast-paced Kentucky History Bowl, a quick-recall academic competition focusing on Kentucky history, will be held during the convention Thursday through Saturday, March 27-29, at the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History and the Frankfort Convention Center.

  • Last Chance to See Immigration Exhibition at KHS

    There is still time to see the Our New Kentucky Home: Immigrant Experiences exhibition at the Kentucky Historical Society's Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History. The exhibition closes on Saturday, March 29. Since the exhibition's opening on April 21, 2007, it has already attracted more than 50,000 visitors.

  • KHS HistoryMobile Debuts "Kentucky's Abraham Lincoln" Exhibit at February 12 Bicentennial Kick-Off

    The Kentucky Historical Society's HistoryMobile, a 300-square-foot exhibit inside a tractor-trailer, will debut "Kentucky's Abraham Lincoln" during the official opening ceremonies of the National Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commemoration on February 12 at the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historic Site in Hodgenville. Sporting a new look, this traveling museum will launch its 2008 tour to locations throughout the state at the national bicentennial kick-off event, including a two-week appearance in the educational exhibit area at the Kentucky State Fair in Louisville.

    America loses hundreds of World War II veterans every day. With them go invaluable eyewitness accounts of a pivotal time in history. The Kentucky Historical Society is working to preserve stories of the WWII years, both from combat and from the homefront.
  • Lincoln Heritage Education Grant Deadline is December 31

    The application deadline for Lincoln Heritage Education Minigrants is Monday, December 31. These grants are available during the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial period to public or private schools. They are intended to support field trips to Kentucky Lincoln sites in April, May, and June 2008.
