  • Executive Director of Liberty Hall takes new position as Curator at KHS

    Sara Elliott has joined the Kentucky Historical Society as a senior-level curator. She began her position on June 18, 2007. Her responsibilities include working with the curatorial staff in building KHS collections and broadening their interpretation through innovative exhibitions and programs. In addition to being responsible for the care and preservation of the Old State Capitol and the portraits in the Toyota Kentucky Hall of Governors, Elliott will help develop ways of telling engaging stories associated with the Old State Capitol and the political leaders who occupied it.

    An article from The Register of the Kentucky Historical Society was named the winner of the Distinguished Writing Award by the Army Historical Foundation at that organization's 10th Annual Members Meeting on June 12. The article is "A Killing in the Philippines, 1900: A Kentuckian Faces Insurgency and Military Justice," by Meredith Mason Brown. It was published in the Winter 2006 issue of The Register.

    It may look like an 18-wheeler-tractor-trailer, but the Kentucky Historical Society's HistoryMobile contains a popular exhibition on Daniel Boone. Sporting a new "skin," this traveling museum will launch its 2007 tour to more than 20 locations throughout the state at the Governor's Derby Breakfast on May 5 on the Capitol grounds in Frankfort.

  • Kentucky Junior Historians Convene in Frankfort

    More than 600 student historians are headed to Frankfort for the forty-fifth annual Kentucky Junior Historical Society convention. Students from every corner of the commonwealth in grades K-12 have prepared projects in categories including historical exhibit, genealogical research, photography, performance, and art. Other competitions, including the fast-paced Kentucky History Bowl, a quick-recall academic competition focusing on Kentucky history, will be held during the convention Thursday through Saturday, March 22-24, at the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History and the Frankfort Convention Center.
  • Public Invited to Participate in Community Scholars Workshop

    The Kentucky Folklife Program has openings for its next Community Scholars workshop. This free, six- session workshop will be split between two locations. On Saturdays, April 14, April 28, and May 12, sessions will be held at the Taylor County Extension Office in Campbellsville. On Saturdays, May 19, June 9, and June 23, sessions will be held at the Washington County Extension Office in Springfield. All sessions are 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

    The World War II battle for Iwo Jima is currently very visible on cinema screens throughout the country, with the recent release of Letters from Iwo Jima and last fall’s release of Flags of Our Fathers, both directed by Clint Eastwood. In Fleming County, Kentucky, the story of Iwo Jima hero and Fleming County native, Franklin Sousley, has been a present reality for more than 60 years.

Zoidis was senior curator of one of the nation’s most treasured artifacts, the Star-Spangled Banner, at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. Clark Center for Kentucky History in Frankfort; her major responsibilities are museum collections and exhibitions.

    Clint Eastwood’s major motion picture Flags of Our Fathers features the story of Kentuckian Franklin Sousley, one of the soldiers who raised the American flag during the Battle of Iwo Jima. The image taken of Sousley and his fellow soldiers is arguably one of the most famous of World War II and is the focus of both the film, set for release on Friday, and a museum theatre presentation at the Kentucky Historical Society.

    The Kentucky Historical Society plans to launch its new Civil Rights Oral History Project website on January 12, 2005 in time for Martin Luther King Day observances and Black History Month in February. The new site features Kentuckians sharing their personal experiences with the Civil Rights Movement in their own words with access to over 300 hours of audio content, 18 hours of video content, and over 10,000 pages of electronic oral history transcriptions.

    This fall, the Kentucky Historical Society successfully launched a series of videoconferences for public school students. Throughout November and December, the Society presented interactive, real-time programming to more than 900 students at 10 schools via the Kentucky Telelinking Network (KTLN). The sessions were targeted to elementary and middle school students.

    In May, 2004 the Kentucky Historical Society was awarded a $74,000 Save America’s Treasures grant.  This grant, matched by funds in the amount of $74,000 from the Kentucky Historical Society Foundation, will allow conservation of nine significant paintings in the Old State Capitol building, including Henry Clay, Daniel Boone, George Washington and others.
