Governor and First Lady Invite All to Attend
FRANKFORT, Ky. – Gov. and Mrs. Steve Beshear invite all Kentuckians and their guests to visit the Capitol on May 3 for the annual Governor’s Derby Breakfast. The traditional celebration has been hosted by Kentucky governors for more than 30 years.
“Derby Day provides an excellent opportunity to showcase the beauty of Kentucky and its heritage,” said Gov. Beshear. “Jane and I are so pleased to invite everyone to come share this time-honored Frankfort Derby tradition.”
The Kentucky Department of Parks will serve up a delicious array of breakfast items under a tent adjacent to the Capitol annex. Guests may choose from country ham, sausage, scrambled eggs, cheese grits, biscuits, fruit juices and coffee. Breakfast is free and open to the public. Food will be served from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m.
In addition to the southern cuisine, a number of activities are planned to entertain visitors of all ages. Gov. and Mrs. Beshear will begin the first heat of the stick horse races at 8:30 a.m. If children want to experience the real thing, pony rides will also be available.
Visitors may choose to tour the Governor’s Mansion or, if weather permits, they may fly high in free hot air balloon rides to be staged on the grounds. Classic car enthusiasts may enjoy the presentation by the Capital City Classic Auto Club.
Other attractions include the Kentucky Historical Society’s HistoryMobile, which will allow spectators to explore the life of Abraham Lincoln. The Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources will have live birds and reptiles on hand. The Kentucky Horse Park will share plans for the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games 2010. The College Info Road Show will offer the best ways to plan and pay for higher education.
Derby Breakfast patrons can sample and purchase Kentucky Proud food items at an exhibit sponsored by the Kentucky Department of Agriculture. Visitors can also browse the Kentucky Arts Council’s “Kentucky Crafted” and “Visual Arts at the Market” exhibits along the front lawn of the Capitol.
The 2008 Governor’s Derby Celebration poster featuring Kentucky thoroughbred champion Citation will be available for purchase. It can also be purchased online through the Kentucky Historical Society’s 1792 store at http://store.kentucky.gov/kyhs/
