    It is with mixed emotions today that I accept Brad Cowgill’s resignation as President of the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education.

    Today I announce my resignation as president of the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education. I do this for one reason: in the foreseeable future, it would be necessary to devote excessive time and effort to unproductive activities, denying me the satisfaction of fruitful work.

    Brad Cowgill, president of the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education, today said that because of changes in the economy that are hurting Kentucky families and putting college loans at risk, a strong consensus has emerged among Council members that favors a conservative approach to tuition growth in order to maintain college affordability and progress toward the state’s Double the Numbers goal.

  • AT 10-YEAR ANNIVERSARY, REPORT SHOWS GAINS IN POSTSECONDARY EDUCATION REFORM, CHALLENGES AHEAD

    Kentucky’s colleges and universities have made significant progress toward the goals of the state’s postsecondary education reform, according to a report released this week by the Council on Postsecondary Education. The Council’s annual Accountability Report, which tracks the state’s progress toward the goals of the Kentucky Postsecondary Education Improvement Act of 1997 (HB1), shows that in the last year Kentucky improved on 17 of 26 performance indicators, held steady on five, and declined on four.
  • COUNCIL URGES STATE LEADERS TO FIND SUFFICIENT REVENUE FOR EDUCATION

    The Council on Postsecondary Education approved a resolution today that calls for the General Assembly and Governor to identify sufficient revenue sources to resolve state budget deficits. Under the current proposed budget, the postsecondary and adult education system is facing a 12 percent budget reduction, in addition to the 3 percent cut in the current year.
  • REPORT SHOWS LINK BETWEEN EDUCATION AND PROSPERITY IN KENTUCKY

    The Council on Postsecondary Education released Kentucky’s 2008-10 County Profiles today, which shows that counties with high numbers of college graduates also have high household median incomes. Of the top 20 counties in the number of adults with a bachelor’s degree or higher, 65 percent (13) of those counties also rank in the top 20 counties with the highest median household income.
  • COLLEGE ENROLLMENT BREAKS RECORD FOR TENTH STRAIGHT YEAR

    Kentucky’s public universities and community and technical colleges enrolled 212,994 students in fall 2007, a 3.2 percent increase over last fall. According to a report released today at a meeting of the Council on Postsecondary Education in Frankfort, this marks a 34.4 percent increase since postsecondary education reform began in fall 1998.
  • KENTUCKY COLLEGES AIM TO BECOME MORE ADULT FRIENDLY

    Representatives of Kentucky’s public and independent colleges will convene next week to examine issues and best practices that impact adult student success. The first-ever Kentucky Adult Learner Summit will be hosted by the Council on Postsecondary Education Feb. 4-5 at the Marriott Griffin Gate in Lexington.
  • COUNCIL REVIEWS 10-YEAR REPORT ON POSTSECONDARY REFORM

    At a meeting today in Frankfort, the Council on Postsecondary Education reviewed a 10-year report on postsecondary education reform released earlier this month by the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce Postsecondary Education Task Force. Aims McGuinness, senior associate of the National Center for Higher Education Management Systems and chief consultant to the task force, presented the report findings and recommendations.
  • KENTUCKY RECEIVES $500,000 TO MAKE COLLEGES MORE ADULT-FRIENDLY

    The Council on Postsecondary Education will receive $500,000 from Lumina Foundation for Education for a statewide effort to increase the number of working-age adults with college degrees. The Kentucky Adult Learner Initiative will include a statewide review of policies that affect adult students and will grant each public four-year institution $50,000 for plans to create or enhance adult-friendly policies and services.
  • CPE PRESIDENT BRAD COWGILL BECKONS KENTUCKY ADULTS BACK TO COLLEGE

    Brad Cowgill, interim president of the Council on Postsecondary Education, joined with representatives from Kentucky’s public colleges and universities in Frankfort today to launch a statewide outreach to former students. Eight public universities, in partnership with the Kentucky Community and Technical College System and the Association of Independent Kentucky Colleges and Universities, will pilot Kentucky’s Project Graduate program to offer incentives and services to former students with 90 or more credit hours to return and complete their degree.
